DescriptionThe administrative archive of Laban up to 31 Jul 2005. This collection documents and records the history of Laban from its early days as the Art of Movement Studio in the 1940s up to its merger with Trinity College of Music in 2005. It comprises administrative files, minutes, architectural plans, photographs, videos, correspondence, publicity material, course information and financial papers.

Administrative historyLaban began life as the Art of Movement Studio in Manchester in 1946. The Studio moved to Addlestone in Surrey in 1953 where it was incorporated into the Laban Art of Movement Centre and remained there until 1975. The Centre then moved to New Cross, South East London in 1976 and was renamed the Laban Centre for Movement and Dance. In 1997 it was rebranded as the Laban Centre, later becoming Laban. In 2003 it moved into its new location in Deptford, South East London. In 2005, Laban merged with Trinity College of Music to become Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.

Archival historyThe archive was transferred from the administrative offices of Laban into the Laban Archive.
Conditions governing accessAccess by appointment only. Many corporate files are closed for 30 years from the last date on the file. Personnel files are closed for 100 years from the last date on the file. Contact Archivist@trinitylaban.ac.uk to make an appointment.
Conditions governing copyingPhotocopying and photography is allowed for private research only and due acknowledgement of the author must be made. A 'Copyright Declaration' form must be filled out before any photocopying of archival material can take place. Photographs can only be copied where Laban owns the copyright, a copy is to be included in a final year dissertation or is for personal research. Copying of audiovisual material is not permitted without the permission of the copyright holders. Please consult the Archivist if you would like to copy any material.

Appraisal notesDuplicates have been weeded.
System of arrangementThe Archive was catalogued in the late 1990s and this order has been retained. The catalogued has been migrated into CALM and has been recatalogued following ISAD(G).
