How do I find something in the archive?

Start by having a look at the 'Showcase' section of the archive catalogue. This gives an overview of the collections we hold and may give you an idea of whether we will have information relating to your research topic. This information is also available on the Trinity Laban website and in the archive leaflet available in the library.

Then click on either the Quick Search box at the top right hand corner of the screen or on the Advanced Search, to search the catalogue. For guidance on how to search the archive catalogue, click on 'How do I search the catalogue?' and/or 'Search tips'

I have found something on the archive catalogue that I want to look at - how do I see it?

Make a note of the reference numbers of the items you want to see and then contact the Archivist either by asking at the library service desk, or emailing at, or telephoning +44 (0)20 8305 9338. You will be asked to make an appointment to see the items. Details of our opening times and location can be found in the 'How to use the Laban Archive' section.

When you come to look at items in the archive, you will be asked to sign a Library and Archive Visitor’s Registration Form and you will be required to show proof of identity and address. You must also read the regulations for using the archive, written on the back of the Form. You will be charged a fee if you are not a student at Trinity Laban. Details of charges can be found in the 'How to use the Laban Archive' section.

You will be required to deposit your bag and coat with the Archivist and to sit at the archive study area whilst looking at documents from the archive.

Can I copy archive items?

Consult the Archivist if you want copies made of archive material – this may not always be possible. Details of charges and regulations are given at the archive study area. You will be required to fill out a Copyright Declaration Form for any photocopies you want. In some cases you can carry out the photocopying yourself, in others the Archivist will do it for you and send it to you.

Can I search the archive catalogue remotely?

Yes you can. The archive catalogue is now available online

Can I search the library and archive catalogues at the same time?

No not yet. However, this facility will be available at some point in the future. Currently, brief details of each collection are being put on to the Laban library catalogue OLIVER with related subject terms and names, as well as information on how to access them.

How can I find out about other archives that might be useful for my research?
